Dryer Taking Two Cycles
You start a load of towels. An hour later they're still damp. So you hit start again. Two cycles for one load has become normal, and you barely notice anymore. That's the dryer telling you something. Most of the time it isn't the dryer at all. It's the air that can't get out. Here's how we sort it out.

What Two Cycles Actually Means
A dryer doesn't really dry clothes with heat alone. It heats air, pushes that air through the drum, and carries the moisture outside through the vent. If the air can't move, the moisture stays in the drum. Clothes come out hot and damp. That's the classic sign. Cold and damp usually points somewhere else, like a heating problem. Hot and damp, long cycles, and a laundry room that feels like a sauna almost always trace back to airflow. Around here, add lint mixed with dust off the desert and vents clog faster than folks expect.
Start With the Vent, Because It's Cheapest
Clogged ductwork is the most common cause, and it costs the least to fix. Lint packs into the flex hose behind the dryer, especially where it's crushed against the wall. Long runs through an attic collect more. The outside flap can be jammed shut with lint, or a bird built in it. Second most common is a crushed or kinked transition hose — the dryer got pushed back too far and folded the duct flat. Third, a lint screen that looks clean but has a film on it from dryer sheets. Water should sheet right through a clean screen.
Safe Checks You Can Do Right Now
Pull the lint screen and hold it under running water. If water pools instead of passing through, scrub it with soap and a soft brush. Next, walk outside and find the vent hood while a load runs. You should feel a steady push of warm air. Weak or no airflow means a blockage between there and the dryer. Then look behind the dryer. Give it a few inches of breathing room and make sure the hose isn't folded. That's the limit of safe DIY. Don't pull panels, don't touch gas connections, and don't run the dryer with the duct disconnected indoors.
When It Isn't the Vent
Sometimes airflow checks out fine and the load still takes forever. Then we look at the blower wheel, which can crack or fill with lint and stop moving air even with clear ducts. Moisture sensor bars inside the drum get coated with residue and read clothes as dry when they aren't, or the opposite. Heating elements can fail partway on electric units, giving you some heat but not enough. Gas models can have burner or valve issues. Those all live behind panels. That's our side of the line, not yours.
What We Do That's Different
We measure instead of guess. Airflow gets checked with a meter at the vent, not by hand. We read temperature rise across the drum to see if the heat source is doing its job. Sensor bars get tested with a meter and cleaned properly. If the duct run is the problem, we can tell you where the blockage sits instead of tearing the whole run apart. Most visits end with a clear answer, not a shrug. We keep swing-shift hours because laundry problems don't wait for weekdays. Call us and tell us how long a load of towels takes.
Dryer Taking Two Cycles — quick answers
Can a clogged dryer vent start a fire?
Yes. Trapped lint plus heat is a real hazard, and blocked vents are a known cause of dryer fires. If your dryer runs hot and clothes stay damp, get the duct cleared soon rather than later.
How often should the vent be cleaned?
Once a year works for most homes. Clean it more often with a long duct run, a big family, or pets. Dusty desert air and heavy towel loads both speed up buildup.
My clothes are damp but the dryer feels cold. Same problem?
Probably not. Cold and damp usually points to a heating issue — element, thermostat, or gas burner — instead of airflow. Those need a meter and panel access, so give us a call.
How it works
- Step 1
Tell us what it's doing
Ring us or fill in the form. Give us the noise, the smell, the error code, the brand. Small details help us load the right parts before we ever knock on your door.
- Step 2
We come look
Our tech tests the machine instead of guessing. You hear what failed and why, in plain words. Then you decide whether repairing it makes sense or replacing it makes more sense.
- Step 3
Repair and retest
Approved work gets done, often the same visit. We run a full cycle before packing up, wipe down the area, and show you what changed so nothing surprises you next week.
