What "runs but doesn't heat" actually tells us
A microwave has two separate jobs. One is the show: light, fan, turntable, timer. The other is cooking, which comes from a high-voltage section that makes the microwave energy. When the show runs fine but food stays cold, the control side is alive and the high-voltage side has quit. That narrows things down fast, and it means resetting or cleaning won't fix it. One more thing worth knowing: the high-voltage parts hold a charge even unplugged. That's why we draw a hard line at the outer cover. Checking things from the outside is fine. Inside is ours. Cause family one: door switches and latch
Cheapest first. Every microwave has small switches in the door frame that confirm the door is truly shut. If one fails or drifts out of alignment, the unit can still light up and spin while the heating circuit stays locked out. Watch for a door that feels loose, one that needs a shove to latch, or a faint click where you used to hear a crisp one. Sagging hinges and a bent latch plate cause this a lot in homes where the microwave sits over the range and gets bumped daily. This is a real repair, not a bandage. Switches are inexpensive and easy to reach once the cover is off, which is our end of the job.
Cause family two: the high-voltage components
Next up is the group that actually makes the heat. A diode, a capacitor, and the magnetron work together, and any one of them failing kills heating while the lights and fan stay happy. We listen for a loud buzz or hum during the cycle, a sharp electrical smell, or a breaker that trips a few seconds in. Sometimes there's a burnt-plastic odor near the vent. In Las Vegas kitchens, grease buildup and summer heat in the cabinet above the range shorten the life of these parts. We test them with a meter after discharging the capacitor, which is the whole reason this is not a DIY zone.
Cause family three: control board or thermal cutout
Third group is the brain and the safety fuses. Microwaves have thermal cutouts that open when the cavity or magnetron runs too hot. Blocked vents, a clogged grease filter, or running the unit empty can trip one. Once it opens, you get everything but heat. A failed control board does the same thing by never sending the command to start heating. Tell us what happened right before it quit. Did you run it a long stretch? Was something smoking?
