Ice Maker Stopped Making Ice
If your ice maker quit, start by checking whether water is reaching it and whether the freezer is actually cold enough. Those two things cause most empty bins. You open the freezer, reach for a handful of ice, and there's nothing there, or one sad clump frozen together. Nobody touched the settings and the fridge still feels cold. Out here in the desert, an ice maker going down in July is not a small thing. Here's what usually causes it.

What an empty ice bin is actually telling you
An ice maker needs water coming in, cold air around the mold, and a signal to dump the cubes. Take away one and production stops. So the empty bin is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Pay attention to what kind of empty it is. A totally dry bin with no cubes usually means water isn't arriving. Hollow or half-formed cubes mean a slow trickle. Cubes frozen into one big block mean melting and refreezing, which points to a temperature or seal problem. A full bin that stopped growing may just be a stuck arm or sensor.
Start with the cheap stuff: switches, arms, and a jammed cube
More ice makers get "fixed" by looking than by wrenching. Check that the ice maker is switched on. Lots of models have a rocker switch or a menu setting that a kid or a grocery run can bump. Then look for the wire shutoff arm inside the bin. If a bag of frozen peas shoved it up, the machine thinks the bin is full and quits. Scoop out the bin and hunt for a single cube wedged in the chute or under the ejector. One cube stalls the whole cycle. Put the bin back in all the way. Some units won't run if it sits crooked.
Water supply and hard-water scale
Valley water leaves scale on everything, and the ice maker's fill tube is a favorite spot. Scale narrows the opening, so the mold gets less water each cycle and cubes come out small, hollow, or crescent-shaped. A clogged or long-overdue water filter does the same thing. Filters are homeowner-friendly on most fridges and worth changing on schedule. Check the saddle valve or shutoff behind the fridge too. If somebody worked on the plumbing, it may have been left partly closed. And if the fridge got pushed back against the wall, the line can kink. Look before you assume the machine failed.
Temperature and airflow problems
Ice needs the freezer at roughly zero degrees Fahrenheit. Warmer than that and the mold takes forever to harden, so production slows or stops. Set a cheap thermometer in the freezer overnight and read it in the morning. If it's running warm, the cooling is your problem, not the ice maker. Usual suspects are a door that isn't sealing, vents blocked by stacked frozen food, or dusty condenser coils. In our climate, and around swamp coolers, humidity swings load a fridge harder than you'd think. Vacuuming accessible coils and clearing vents is safe to do yourself. Anything past that is ours.
What we do that you can't from the kitchen floor
We test the fill valve for actual flow instead of guessing. We check the mold heater and the ejector motor circuit, watch how the control board behaves through a test cycle, and measure real temperatures at the evaporator rather than trusting the display. We also look for a frozen fill tube caused by a valve that leaks by slowly. That one fools a lot of people into replacing a perfectly good ice maker. It means panel work and electrical testing, which is where a homeowner should stop. We repair all major brands as an independent shop, and we work swing-shift hours because most folks can't wait around at noon. Call us and tell us what the bin looks like.
Ice Maker Stopped Making Ice — fast answers
How long should a new ice maker take to start producing?
Give it 12 to 24 hours after installation or a filter change. The freezer has to reach temperature, and the first few batches often get tossed. If the bin is still dry after a full day, something's wrong.
Why does my ice taste stale or smell like the freezer?
Old cubes soak up odors. Dump the bin, wash it with mild soap, dry it, and let fresh ice build up. If the taste sticks around, the water filter is probably overdue.
Is it worth repairing or should I just buy bagged ice?
Depends on the cause. A stuck arm or clogged filter is a quick fix. A cooling problem affects the whole fridge and your food safety, so that one should get looked at either way.
How it works
- Step 1
Tell us what it's doing
Ring us or fill in the form, and describe the noise, the smell, the error code and the brand. Small details help us load the right parts before we ever knock on your door.
- Step 2
We come look
Our tech tests the machine instead of guessing. You hear what failed and why, in plain words. Then you decide whether repairing it makes sense or replacing it makes more sense.
- Step 3
Repair and retest
Approved work gets done, often on the same visit. We run a full cycle before packing up, wipe down the area, then show you what changed so nothing surprises you next week.

Why homeowners call us
- We know hard waterValley water leaves scale on everything, and we see it in clogged dishwasher jets and crusted washer valves. Water heaters groan, too. We check for mineral buildup out of habit, because around here it's usually part of the story.
- Swing-shift friendlyNot everybody is home at ten in the morning. We schedule around night shifts and split shifts, and around long commutes. Tell us the window that actually works for your household and we'll aim for it.
- Independent, not steeredNobody pays us to push a brand. We service all major makes as an independent shop, so our advice on repair versus replace comes from what we saw inside your machine.
- Straight talk on old unitsSome appliances aren't worth another part. We'll say so. If a repair is likely to buy you real time, we'll say that too, and let you pick from there.
- All major brands, gas & electricFrom Whirlpool and GE to Samsung, LG, Bosch and KitchenAid, serviced independently.
- Straight answersIf it isn't worth repairing, we'll say so, often right on the phone.
