The Coil-Cleaning Habit That Saves Refrigerators
If your fridge is running louder and longer than it used to, start by cleaning the condenser coils, and call us if that doesn't settle it down. The kitchen feels warm near the back of the unit, ice cream goes soft while the milk is still fine, and nothing has actually broken, so it's easy to put off. Most of the time we find a blanket of dust on those coils. Out here, dust and hard-water grit build up fast. Five minutes with a vacuum saves a lot of grief later.

What dust on the coils actually does
Condenser coils dump heat out of the fridge. Coat them in dust and that heat has nowhere to go, so the compressor runs longer and longer to hit the same temperature. Longer run times mean more heat, more wear, and a motor that never gets a rest. In a Las Vegas summer, with the kitchen already sitting at 82 degrees, that margin disappears fast. Over a couple of years a fridge that used to cycle normally will run almost nonstop. That's when the freezer starts drifting, the compressor gets loud, and parts that should have lasted quit early.
The five-minute habit
Unplug the fridge first. Every time. Then pull off the toe-grille at the bottom front, or slide the unit out and look at the lower back panel. Don't remove screws or open sealed panels. On a lot of models the coils sit right behind that snap-off grille. Vacuum with a crevice tool, then go after the clingy stuff with a soft brush. Get the fan grille too if you can reach it without going past a panel. Wipe the floor while you're down there. Plug it back in, push it back, and listen. A clean fridge sounds calmer within the hour.
How often, and what changes it
Twice a year is a fair baseline for most homes. Do it more often if you have shedding pets, if the fridge sits in a garage, or if you run a swamp cooler. Evaporative cooling pushes moist air around the house, and moist dust turns into a felt mat that a vacuum barely touches. Doing a remodel or any drywall work? Clean the coils once the dust settles, not months later. We like tying it to something you already remember, like the time change in spring and fall. Write it inside a cabinet door if that helps.
Signs prevention already came too late
Watch for these. The compressor runs constantly and never cycles off. The cabinet near the bottom or the side feels hot, not warm. Ice cream stays soft while the fridge section holds fine. Frost builds on one wall of the freezer. Water pools under the crisper drawers. Or you hear a click every few minutes, then nothing. Any one of those means something beyond dust is going on, and a cleaning won't fix it. Quit guessing at that point. Call us and tell us what you hear and where it feels hot. That shortens the diagnosis.
What to skip and when to call us
Skip anything that needs a screwdriver on a sealed panel. Skip the black box near the compressor. Skip water and spray cleaners on coils. And skip bending fins to get at dust, because they tear skin and they don't go back straight. If your model hides the coils behind a fastened rear cover, leave that one for a tech. We work swing hours because most folks can't take a weekday off, and we repair all major brands as an independent shop. Call us with the model number if you can find it, usually on a sticker inside the fridge along the left wall.
The Coil-Cleaning Habit That Saves Refrigerators — fast answers
Can dirty coils make my fridge stop cooling completely?
Not usually on their own. But they push the compressor and fan hard for years, and that strain is often what finally pulls a part down. Once cooling stops for good, a cleaning rarely brings it back.
My coils look clean. Why is the fridge still running nonstop?
Some models put the coils where you can't see them without removing a panel. Other causes: a failing door seal, a blocked freezer vent, a fan that quit. Tell us what you hear and we'll sort it out.
Is it safe to clean coils while the fridge is plugged in?
No. Unplug it first, every time. Fans can kick on without warning, and vacuums plus power don't mix. With the doors closed, your food is fine for the few minutes this takes.
How it works
- Step 1
Tell us what it's doing
Ring us or fill in the form, and describe the noise, the smell, the error code and the brand. Small details help us load the right parts before we ever knock on your door.
- Step 2
We come look
Our tech tests the machine instead of guessing. You hear what failed and why, in plain words. Then you decide whether repairing it makes sense or replacing it makes more sense.
- Step 3
Repair and retest
Approved work gets done, often on the same visit. We run a full cycle before packing up, wipe down the area, then show you what changed so nothing surprises you next week.

Why homeowners call us
- We know hard waterValley water leaves scale on everything, and we see it in clogged dishwasher jets and crusted washer valves. Water heaters groan, too. We check for mineral buildup out of habit, because around here it's usually part of the story.
- Swing-shift friendlyNot everybody is home at ten in the morning. We schedule around night shifts and split shifts, and around long commutes. Tell us the window that actually works for your household and we'll aim for it.
- Independent, not steeredNobody pays us to push a brand. We service all major makes as an independent shop, so our advice on repair versus replace comes from what we saw inside your machine.
- Straight talk on old unitsSome appliances aren't worth another part. We'll say so. If a repair is likely to buy you real time, we'll say that too, and let you pick from there.
- All major brands, gas & electricFrom Whirlpool and GE to Samsung, LG, Bosch and KitchenAid, serviced independently.
- Straight answersIf it isn't worth repairing, we'll say so, often right on the phone.
