Summer heat: refrigerators and freezers work overtime
When garages and laundry rooms hit triple digits, a fridge compressor barely gets a break. We get the most "not cold enough" calls in July and August. Often the machine is fine — the condenser coils are packed with dust and pet hair, so heat has nowhere to go. Pull the fridge out and vacuum the coils at the back or behind the lower grille. Leave a few inches of breathing room at the sides. If ice cream is soft but milk is cold, or the unit runs nonstop and the sides feel hot, call us before the food goes.
Swamp cooler season: humidity swings that fool your dryer
Evaporative coolers dump moisture into the house. That's comfortable, but a dryer pulling humid indoor air takes longer to dry a load, and lint stays damp and sticky in the vent. Long cycles and a hot laundry room usually mean restricted airflow, not a bad heater. Disconnect nothing — just check that the outside vent flap opens when the dryer runs, and clear the lint screen every load. Wash the screen in soapy water if water beads on it instead of soaking through. Damp lint plus heat is a fire risk, so don't let it slide.
Hard water, all year: dishwashers, washers, and ice makers
Scale is the quiet one. Mineral buildup coats heating elements, clogs dishwasher spray holes, and jams ice maker fill valves. You'll see cloudy glasses, gritty film on plates, dishes still wet at the end of a cycle, or ice cubes that come out hollow and small. Run a citric-acid or vinegar cleaning cycle in the dishwasher monthly. Poke debris out of the spray arm holes with a toothpick. If your ice maker slowed way down or your washer fills slower each month, the inlet screens are likely crusted over. That's a service call, not a DIY.
Spring dust and wind: filters, seals, and vents
Wind season pushes fine dust everywhere. It lands on fridge door gaskets, in dryer vent hoods, and on range hood filters. Dust on a gasket keeps the seal from grabbing, so the door sits open a hair and the compressor never stops. Wipe gaskets with warm soapy water and dry them. Test the seal with a dollar bill — close the door on it, and if it slides out easily, the gasket needs attention. Check outdoor dryer vent hoods for nests and blown-in debris. Pull and rinse washable range hood filters while you're at it.
Cold snaps and holidays: the checks worth doing in fall
Desert nights get cold, and appliances in unheated garages feel it. Fridges in cold garages can stop cycling properly and let the freezer thaw. Washer lines in an exposed wall can freeze during a hard snap. Before the holiday cooking starts, run the oven empty at 350 and check it actually gets there with a cheap oven thermometer.
