Summer heat: refrigerators and freezers work overtime
When garages and laundry rooms hit triple digits, a fridge compressor barely gets a break. July and August bring us the most "not cold enough" calls. Often the machine is fine and the condenser coils are just packed with dust and pet hair, so the heat has nowhere to go. Pull the fridge out and vacuum the coils at the back or behind the lower grille. Leave a few inches of breathing room at the sides. If ice cream is soft but milk is cold, or the unit runs nonstop and the sides feel hot, call us before the food goes.
Swamp cooler season: humidity swings that fool your dryer
Evaporative coolers dump moisture into the house. That's comfortable for you, but a dryer pulling humid indoor air takes longer to dry a load, and the lint stays damp and sticky in the vent. Long cycles and a hot laundry room usually mean restricted airflow rather than a bad heater. Don't disconnect anything. Just check that the outside vent flap opens while the dryer runs, and clear the lint screen every load. Wash the screen in soapy water if water beads on it instead of soaking through. Damp lint plus heat is a fire risk, so don't let it slide.
Hard water, all year: dishwashers, washers, and ice makers
Scale is the quiet one. Mineral buildup coats heating elements, clogs dishwasher spray holes, and jams ice maker fill valves. You'll see cloudy glasses, a gritty film on plates, dishes still wet at the end of a cycle, or ice cubes that come out hollow and small. Run a citric-acid or vinegar cleaning cycle in the dishwasher monthly. Poke debris out of the spray arm holes with a toothpick. If your ice maker slowed way down, or your washer fills slower every month, the inlet screens are probably crusted over. That's a service call, not a DIY.
Spring dust and wind: filters, seals, and vents
Wind season pushes fine dust everywhere. It lands on fridge door gaskets, in dryer vent hoods, and on range hood filters. Dust on a gasket keeps the seal from grabbing, so the door sits open a hair and the compressor never shuts off. Wipe gaskets with warm soapy water and dry them. Test the seal with a dollar bill: close the door on it, and if it slides right out, the gasket needs attention. Check outdoor dryer vent hoods for nests and blown-in debris. Pull and rinse washable range hood filters while you're out there.
Cold snaps and holidays: the checks worth doing in fall
Desert nights get cold, and appliances sitting in unheated garages feel it. A fridge in a cold garage can stop cycling properly and let the freezer thaw. Washer lines in an exposed wall can freeze during a hard snap. Before the holiday cooking starts, run the oven empty at 350 and see whether it actually gets there, using a cheap oven thermometer. Run a full dishwasher cycle and watch for slow drainage. Test every burner. Finding a problem in October beats finding it with a turkey in the oven. We work swing shifts and later hours, so reach us.

Why does my refrigerator struggle only in summer?
Higher room temperature plus dirty condenser coils. The compressor can shed heat in winter, but not in July. Vacuum the coils and give the unit some clearance. If it still can't hold temperature, something else is going.
Does a water softener help my appliances?
Generally yes. Softened or filtered water slows scale on heating elements, valves, and spray arms. It won't undo buildup that's already there, so regular cleaning cycles still matter for dishwashers and ice makers.
How often should I have the dryer vent cleared?
About once a year for most homes, sooner if you dry heavy loads or run a swamp cooler. Longer dry times and a hot laundry room are your signals to go check it.
