Smell Gas Near the Stove? Do These Things, in This Order
If your kitchen smells like rotten eggs, get everybody outside and call your gas utility's emergency line from the yard. That smell means gas, faint or strong, and the order you do things in matters. Below is what to do in the first few minutes, what to leave alone, and who gets the first phone call. Read it standing outside, not at the stove.

First few minutes: do these in order
1. Don't flip any switches. Leave lights alone, on or off. 2. Check the burner knobs. Make sure every one is fully off, including the oven dial. 3. Open windows and the back door if you can do it fast. 4. Get people and pets outside. 5. From outside, call your gas utility's emergency line. Most run around the clock. 6. Wait outdoors until someone tells you the house is clear. Strong smell? Jump straight to step 4. Windows can wait. Getting out matters more than airing out. Once the utility clears the house, call us about the appliance itself.
What not to do, even if you're curious
Don't light a match or a lighter to "test" anything. Don't run the range hood or a fan plugged into the wall. Your phone stays off until you're out the door. Skip the garage door opener and the doorbell. Don't unplug the range or reach behind it. Leave the back panel on, and leave the flex line behind the stove alone. Those are utility and technician jobs, and gas fittings need proper leak testing. Don't assume a pilot light is the whole story. And don't go back in for the laptop. Nothing in there is worth it.
When to leave the house and stay out
Leave right away if the smell is strong, if you hear hissing near the stove, or if anyone feels dizzy, nauseous, or has a headache that eases up once they're outdoors. Those are get-out-now signs. Go far enough that you're clearly clear of the building. Across the street is a good rule. Don't stand in the garage. About shutting off gas or power: only touch an outside meter valve if your utility told you to and you know which one it is. Panel breakers are inside, and flipping one makes a spark. Let the utility handle shutoff.
Some smells aren't a gas leak
A new oven often smells sharp and oily the first few uses. That's factory coating burning off. Spilled food on the bake element smells like smoke, not eggs. A quick whiff of gas when a burner clicks before it lights is normal. If it lingers after the flame catches, that's not. Gas itself has no odor at all. Utilities add a rotten-egg scent so you notice it. If that's what you smell, treat it as real even if it's faint. Sometimes a sewer trap or a dead mouse in a wall fools people, but never guess your way through it.
Us versus the utility: who does what
Call the utility first, always. They come out and check for leaks in the line, the meter, and the connections. They may tag the appliance and shut it off. That's their call, not ours, and it's the right order. Call us after that for the appliance side. Weak or uneven burner flames, an oven igniter that glows but never lights, a burner that won't stay lit, a valve that sticks. Can I keep using the oven if the smell went away?
No. Leave it off until the utility checks the line and a technician looks at the appliance. A smell that comes and goes can mean an intermittent leak, or a valve that isn't seating.
Should I turn off the gas at the meter myself?
Only if your utility walks you through it. Meter valves need the right tool and the correct direction. Turning gas back on is a utility job anyway, so calling them is faster.
Why do I smell gas when I light a burner?
A short whiff before ignition is normal as gas reaches the igniter. If it lasts after the flame is burning, or you smell it with everything off, stop using the range and call.
